Open Essex 2024

  • The Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art 30d Essex Street Buffalo, NY, 14222 United States (map)

The third annual Open Essex is happening on June 22 from 3-8 PM at 30 Essex Street.

This all-ages outdoor event invites the community to explore BICA and the historic Essex Street Arts Center, offering a day filled with art, music, food, and activities.

In the Galleries:

Alex Boeschenstein: Silent Terminalia

In the early Roman world, Terminalia festivals were held annually to celebrate the thresholds between adjoining properties. The boundary stones—frequently a centaur-like combination of a found rock for a base and the carved bust of the god Terminus for a top—around which these festivals took place, demarcated the meeting point of two zones of human dominion and control.  In “Silent Terminalia” Alex Boeschenstein’s uncanny works mark the speculative threshold between the human and the non-human, the known and the unknown, the everyday and the cosmically horrifying.

Hannah Lin

The BICA School Project Space will feature new ceramic works by BICA School artist Hannah Lin.

In the Parking Lot:

Open Essex will transform the Essex Street Arts Center parking lot into a vibrant hub of creativity. Visitors can enjoy installations and an open-air art fair featuring works by local artists, with some pieces available for purchase. Featured Artists include wavy, H Boone, Koala, Quincy Miracle, Emily Constantin, Nick Mass, Angela Guest, JP4Hire, Alison Cortes, and Natalie Hayes & Lucas Cook.

Music:

Through the beginning of the event DJ Chango4 will spin hits for the heat. Later enjoy a set by T.T.T.T. (Jacob King).

Activities:

•    Crafts with Stitch Buffalo

•    Leave your mark with chalk anywhere in the parking lot

Food and Drink:

•    Enjoy minimal intervention wines Fingerlakes Wine from Usonia Wine. Usonia Wine explores diverse winemaking possibilities in New York State, using fruit from their vineyard on Cayuga Lake and from likeminded growers to create vibrant and honest wines true to their origins.
