Nando Alvarez-Perez: Highlights

Nando Alvarez-Perez: Post Industrial Living Situation VI (Highlights)

This exhibition was part of PLAY/GROUND, a Western New York-wide art event that took place in Medina, NY. It featured the work of 29 artists, including BICA’s presentation of Nando Alvarez-Perez.

This installation by BICA co-founder Nando Alvarez-Perez is a re-imagining of what a classroom would look like if educational institutions were run by artists. Alvarez-Perez’s installation contains photographs, books, and objects that launch discussions about history, power, and the transmission of knowledge through time. This space is both a personal catalog of Alvarez-Perez’ influences and one for considering the ways in which the lessons of the past seem constantly to have to be learned and relearned in the present day.

At various points during the exhibition, Alvarez-Perez directedc activations in the space including a performance by drag queen Vidalia May, a lecture by educator and actor David Hayes, screenings of John Berger’s landmark film Ways of Seeing, and conducting readings of audience members’ oracles from the I Ching.
